Venue: Star And Shadow Cinema
Dates: Tuesday 4th May 2010
Time: 7.30pm – 9.30pm / 10.00pm

At last we can bring you this rescheduled event! Music lovers come join us for this experimental night…

The film, made in the great late era of silent film, is an unapologetically emotional rollercoaster of a story in which a man scarred in punishment as a child with a permanent smile tries to deal with the rough hand life has dealt him.

Maximo Park play music they’ve composed specially for this event as you’ve never heard them before: instrumental, experimental and giving full reign to their dense synthetic instincts. We have the best available 35mm copy of this film from the Cinetecca film archivein Bologna.

SOLD OUT

Evening show 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Hi Peeps,

Finished the 2nd draft of the script 4 weeks ago and delivered to Kate and NLFF! Certainly 2nd drafts are like turning yourself inside out. I spent five weeks on the 2nd draft - the first three weeks just thinking how to attack all the problems that Kate pointed out in our meeting on the 19th. My main problem is one character, Lynx, keeps over taking the plot, Ahhhh! he isn’t doing what I want him to and my main character, Leo, keeps getting sidelined. So I have had to drastically cut Lynx’s scenes without Leo… I am finding it hard as hell to kill my babies. But it’s gotta be done.

I am so glad to be writing the script. Got a long way to go. It is so refreshing to hear the characters talking. Even if it goes in the wrong direction and you have to re-write and re-write it is really invigorating to be out of the claustrophobia of treatment-land and outline-hell. Looking forward to the feedback on my last session with Kate.

There is a reading of a couple of scenes from my 2nd draft at the NORTHERN LIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL on the Saturday the 27th March if anyone is down in Newcastle and wants to see me being interviewed by Ian Fenton. It’s from 14:00pm - 16:00pm in the Tyneside Bar at the Tyneside Cinema, NEWCASTLE.

Be great to have access to actors reading my script at such an early stage. A tad frightening, but I am looking forward to it.

Enjoy the Festival.

Ta for reading.

Director Bahman Ghobadi / Iran 2009 / 106 min
Certificate 15 / In Persian with English Subtitles

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad imposed a ban on ‘Western and decadent music’ in Iran soon after taking power, yet No One Knows About Persian Cats portrays Tehran as a city with a vibrant underground indie rock scene, and features a number of bands who sound and look good enough to be gaining coverage in NME. Made in secret, and in fear for the crew’s safety this is a remarkable film that cannot be broadcast in the country it was made.

After the screening there will be a skype interview with director Bahman Ghobadi and some of the young people in the film to find out about the frightening reality of rule breaking in Iran.
