Welcome to the 5th Northern Lights Film Festival

Since 2003, Northern Lights Film Festival has grown year-on-year into one of the UK’s best-loved film events.
Each year we have brought the most exciting new films made across northern Europe to the UK and given audiences the chance to meet many of the filmmakers and producers who have created them.
We’ve also made it our mission to encourage new talent by making films, from multi-award winning professional shorts to the awarding of NLFF’s very own production prizes.
This year, with our main venue at Tyneside Cinema currently in its temporary single-screen home in Gateshead, we’ve taken the opportunity to change the format. NLFF 2007 is a springboard for a very exciting future and we’ve crafted a festival that celebrates the past, keeps pace with the present and looks ahead to the future in one action-packed weekend!
Enjoy the show!
The Past
We’ve screened a lot of brilliant films at NLFF, and after much heated debate we’ve chosen five that sum up the best of NLFF past. We hope you agree with our choices! You can experience the agonising drama of Festen and the laugh out loud fun of Kops once again, and we’re also thrilled to present to you a very special, once-in-a-lifetime screening of the magical Into Great Silence at St. Paul’s Church, Jarrow. See all of our Past screenings…
The Present
Competition has been greater than ever as, once again, we’ve hunted out the finest new releases from our Nordic and Baltic partners. Watch out for the truly superb opening and closing gala films, a tremendous family movie and exclusive screenings of the new films from the great Lars von Trier and the brilliant young talent Josef Fares. See all of our Present screenings…
The Future
Is (of course) unwritten, but we’ve polished our crystal ball to bring you a roll-call of some of the hottest young directorial talents in the UK. See all of our Future screenings…
We launch an exciting new fund for budding feature filmmakers, and start our search for the next generation of North East talent with the recruitment of 15-18 year olds to our Northern Stars Young Persons’ Film Academy 2008.
With thanks to the visionary support of Northern Rock Foundation we also start the global search for a new Artistic Director for Northern Lights. Could it be you?
