Zozo 12A Regional Premiere

Sunday 9 December, 15.45

Dir. Josef Fares. Sweden, UK & Denmark 2005. 105 mins. In Arabic & Swedish with English subtitles. Feature Film.

Zozo is a triumphant modern-day fable from Josef Fares, one of NLFF audiences’ favourite directors. His latest film moves a step away from the hilarious comedy of previous festival hits Jalla! Jalla! and Kops, but is no less remarkable.

This stunning semi-autobiographical drama is the story of a young Arabic boy Zozo, who emigrates from Lebanon to Sweden after the murder of his parents.

Fares and his family were themselves refugees to Sweden and his thoughtful tale of the journey of his young counterpart Zozo is a cinematic adventure which vividly captures Beirut in the grip of civil war.

Shot through with moments of sublime beauty to offset the terror of Zozo’s life in the Lebanon, and the stark differences he finds in his new life in Sweden, Fares’ film is a unique and heartfelt gem.
