Closing Gala: Hope 18 Nadzieja UK Premiere
Sunday 9 December, 20.20
Dirs. Stanislaw Mucha. Poland & Germany 2007. 105 mins. In Polish with English subtitles. Feature Film.
NLFF 2007 closes with this gripping and powerful story taken from an idea by the legendary late director Krzysztof Kieslowski, part of a loose trilogy including Tom Tykwer’s Heaven and Danis Tanovic’s L’Enfer.
An elegantly-crafted story of blackmail, deceit and redemption, Hope is the story of 20-year-old Franciszek, who witnesses and records the theft of a rare painting from the Warsaw church where his father works.
Discovering that the thief is respected gallery owner and politician Benedict Weber, Franciszek finds himself sinking further into a twisted game of blackmail of his own making, and as he tries to make Weber undo his crime the scene is set for a symbolic and thoughtful moral tale that thrills at every twist.
