Northern Stars Youth Film Academy Unrated UK Premiere
Sunday 19th November, 6.00pm (T)
Monday 20th November (looped screening), 10.00am until 3.00pm
In 2005 we started Northern Stars youth Film Academy, which offered a 10-month opportunity for young people to make films mentored by professional filmmakers. Despite being early in their filmmaking careers, the depth of their plotlines, the visual splendour of their films and the sheer dedication to detail whilst just working for such a short time is a telling note of how important it is to nurture young talent.
The results of Northern Stars 2005 can be seen in this exclusive screening of the group’s amazing work. The following shorts are supported by the National Lottery™ through the UK Film Council’s First Light intiative.
Spiked UK Premiere
Director: Faye Boustead, Short, UK, 5 minutes, 2006, English.
Spiked is a multi-narrative, part animated drama-documentary revealing a sensitive and inciteful depiction of individual encounters with drug-rape. It tackles the subject from the perspective of the survivors as they reflect upon the events.
Mentored by animator Ellie Land and documentary filmmaker Bridget Deane, the four-person team working on this short have created a lyrical and moving film. It was directed by Faye Boustead from a script by Faye Boustead and Richard White. Cinematography by Jennifer Kerven and produced by Caeley Elcock.
Road UK Premiere
Director: Michael Pattison, Short, UK, 4 minutes, 2006, English.
The tale of two backpackers who are left for dead on a deserted country road. Told entirely in point of view shots, it is a teasing dissection of the two primary elements of cinema: sight and sound. A beautifully shot thriller that will leave you wanting more than its short running time allows.
Mentored by filmmaker Andrew Coats, Michael Pattison directed the film and edited alongside scriptwriter Sophia Pitt. The film was produced and sound designed by Cherylanne Morton. Cinematography by James Mernagh. This film is based on an original idea by Michael Pattison and James Mernagh.
Director’s Cut UK Premiere
