During World War 2, more than 70,000 children were evacuated from Finland to Sweden. Eero, a happy little boy living with his parents in wartime Finland, has his world changed forever when his dad is killed on the Russian front.
When the Finnish authorities evacuate him to neutral Sweden, and away from his mum, he finds himself in a world where he can’t speak the language, and his new parents are unable to speak his. It’s a difficult beginning for the boy, especially as his new ‘mum’ is also saddled with grief at the loss of her own child a few years before...
Beautifully shot and amazingly acted, this powerful film was Finland’s official entry to this year’s Academy Awards. A real weepie, make sure that you don’t forget your tissues!
