Into Great Silence PG Die Grobe Stille Regional Premiere
Sunday 19th November, 5.05pm (T)
Director: Philip Gröning, Documentary, 164 minutes, Germany, Switzerland & France, 2005.
On paper, this seems a toughie, but on closer inspection, it’s a truly awe-inspiring film. After an initial request 20 years ago, filmmaker Philip Gröning obtained permission to document the day-to-day routines of a reclusive Roman Catholic order of whom no aural or visual documentation exists.
Contemplative and graceful, the result enthralls you as the dedication and routine of the monks’ lives and the intense sense of calm that you feel when you watch them at work, bring the film together into a work of sublime majesty. Forget yoga, aromatherapy and massage, this is one of the most relaxing and enlightening times you’ll have.
To complete your lovely evening, there’s a delicious FREE Hot Chocolate for every audience member, courtesy of Kitsch’n, Acorn Road, Jesmond and Divine Chocolate.
“A poetic essay on the slowed-down rhythms of life...surprisingly exhilarating” - Variety
