When Director Nicholas Winding Refn made the internationally acclaimed Pusher and Bleeder (Northern Lights Film Festival 2005) with his producer Henrik Danstrop, they were on top of the world. The films were box office hits and they were hailed as the new stars of Danish cinema. But the next film they made, Fear X, despite being a huge critical success, didn’t do as well at the box office and left them 5.5 million Danish Kroner in debt.
Despite this setback, they had their credentials as artists intact, and set out on a mission to make back their cash and to restore their faith in their own talents. Gambler is the documentary about that journey.
A fascinating look behind the curtain of the film industry as they struggle to restore their egos and their bank balances - it proves that there really is no business like show business!
