Northern Stars: Youth Film Academy Strangely Beautiful film image

Northern Stars is the youth film academy of the Northern Lights Film Festival, the only production and exhibition festival in the North of England

The film academy is part of Tyneside Cinema and Northern Light’s Film Festival’s support for the most gifted and committed young film makers of the region.

The emphasis within Northern Stars is based on a focused approach to learning the skills required to make short films. Members will have fun and make friends but that fun is tempered with serious attention to detail and a lot of concentrated hard work. We aim to provide participants with the skills for further study in the field or a lifetime’s enjoyment making films for pleasure.

This is the first year of the academy and will focus on weekend and holiday skills-development workshops and film challenges.

In September and October this year the academy members will be introduced to a broad range of training from acting for camera and directing, to editing and scriptwriting. These workshops will be led by a range of professionals form the industry, including Patrick Collerton, Emmy award winning director of The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off.

The highlight of the of the academy this year will be the film making challenge in October half-term, which is a great opportunity for new members to get to know each other and face exciting opportunities. Participants will work together to create a short film based on one of the themes of the Festival, which will then be screened during Northern Lights in November 2005.
