WELCOME TO NORTHERN LIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL 2005

Northern Lights is back with another collection of fantastic stories from Northern Europe, the UK, and the Baltic. This is year we also welcome Stellan Skarsgård to the party as our new festival patron!

With premieres, feature films, shorts, documentaries, animation and artists’ film we’ve got something for everyone, and this year we have a pair of extra special celebrations to mark. We’re commemorating the bicentenary of the birth of Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen and the centenary of Greta Garbo’s birth – two of Northern Europe’s biggest exports.

Northern Lights is about making film as much as watching it. So, as with last year, we’re bringing together the people behind feature filmmaking in the UK and Europe to take part in a film industry summit. One lucky filmmaker will win £5,000 and we are launching one of the biggest filmmaking prizes in the UK, created to foster the development of the region's talent.

Looking to the future, we’ve also launched a film academy for young people. They’ll learn how to make films from the experts. And as ever we are taking fantastic and rarely-seen films into schools and colleges from Berwick to Billingham.

2005 is the biggest range of films and events yet. As well as screening new films at Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, you'll find us at Kino, Middlesbrough, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Side Cinema and Seven Stories, Newcastle, in Eldon Square shopping centre and even in bars across Newcastle city centre.

Enjoy the show!
