Welcome to Northern Lights 2004

Bringing you a choice selection of the very best films made throughout Northern Europe.

Northern Lights is a very special opportunity for you to experience the finest new cinematic storytelling from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK. This year we welcome Germany to the party too!

Packed into the festival programme are many films exclusive to Northern Lights in the UK, and this may well (sadly) be the only chance you will have to see them. Despite their high quality many of these fantastic films are unlikely to be distributed in the UK – so you won’t get to see these films anywhere else – at the cinema, on TV or on video.

Northern Lights is as much about making film as it is about watching it. This year we are inviting moviemaking talent from five countries to work with us to make six short films and we are hosting a major industry summit on the future of feature filmmaking in Northern Europe. We’re embarking on a whole new learning programme with FREE scriptwriting masterclasses, an animation tour, editing masterclasses and a schools’ filmmaking project that follows in the footsteps of the professionals over the film summit weekend.

Alongside the brand new features and family films, we have late night thrillers, short films, artists’ films, a clutch of galas, FREE movies for schools, and a few second chances to see some much-loved classics and ‘lost’ treasures from the last few years. This year Northern Lights Film Festival is also shining over more of the North East region. As well as screening new films at Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, the festival finds a home at Kino in Middlesbrough, UGC in Boldon, Newcastle and at schools right across the region.
